Dr Craig Sinclair awarded MRFF funding to improve supported decision-making

A NeuRA researcher has been awarded a Medical Research Futures Fund Grant for a project to improve supported decision-making for people living with dementia and acquired disability.

NeuRA Senior Research Scientist and Senior Reserach Fellow in the University of NSW School of Psychology, Dr Craig Sinclair, will receive $397,917.97 under the 2024 MRFF Dementia Ageing and Aged Care Mission. His project Building capacity for supported decision-making for people living with Dementia and acquired DisabilitY’, has been nicknamed Buddy’.

This project will assist Australian aged care services in delivering high quality supported decision-making, which is required under the new Aged Care Act and aged care quality standards,” Dr Sinclair said.

A number of resources will be provided to assist aged care providers in reviewing their policies, training their staff and informing decision supporters about their role. The researchers will test these resources using a controlled trial and interviews with staff and aged care service users.”

Dr Sinclair and his team will prepare a coordinated package of resources and experiential learning methods. The project will also test the effectiveness of the strategy.
