Happy International Women's Day 2022

We are proud to be celebrating International Women’s Day and sharing some of the ways our incredible researchers are taking action to #BreaktheBias

Dr Kylie Radford is a clinical neuropsychologist and Research Fellow leading the Aboriginal Health and Ageing Group at NeuRA. Her diverse clinical research experience has involved studying early onset dementia, alcohol dependence, and cognitive rehabilitation for acquired brain injuries, mild cognitive impairment and epilepsy, as well as population brain ageing.

Associate Professor Sylvia Gustin is the Rebecca L. Cooper Fellow, senior neuroscientist and psychologist at NeuRA & UNSW. She is Director of the Centre for Pain IMPACT at NeuRA. For the past 20 years (13 years postdoc, self-funded) Associate Professor Gustin has been using brain imaging techniques and psychological assessment to investigate the central and psychological circuits underlying chronic pain in humans.

Claire Boswell-Ruys has worked in the area of spinal cord injuries for the past 20 years. Claire’s research within the spinal cord injury field has included multiple clinical trials to improve health outcomes. She has investigated the effectiveness of inspiratory muscle training (IMT) for respiratory function, breathlessness and quality of life; functional electrical stimulation for cough and respiratory function; probiotics for the prevention of urinary tract infections and bowel function; and neurostimualtion techniques to enhance muscle strength.

Kerith-Rae Dias is a PhD student in Neurogenomics in Associate Professor Tony Roscioli’s lab. Her fascination with DNA led her to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Genetics from the University of Auckland, New Zealand followed by a Master of Forensic Science from the University of Western Australia.

Professor Kaarin Anstey is an ARC Laureate Fellow and Scientia Professor at UNSW, and a Senior Principal Research Scientist at NeuRA. She is Director of the UNSW Ageing Futures Institute, leads an NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Cognitive Health, is a director of the NHMRC Dementia Centre for Research Collaboration and Co-Deputy Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Population Ageing Research. Kaarin conducts public health research into dementia risk reduction ranging from analysis of cohort studies, development of risk assessment tools, and conducting risk reduction trials.

Professor Kim Delbaere is a Senior Principal Research Scientist at NeuRA and Director of Innovation & Translation at the Falls, Balance & Injury Research Centre, supported by the Australian NHMRC, and Professor at University of New South Wales, Sydney. She graduated in 2001 as a master in Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy at the Ghent University (Belgium) and completed her PhD in 2005 on falls in older people. In 2006, she moved to Australia to work at NeuRA on fear of falling in older people.

Associate Professor Gatt completed her PhD in Psychology at the University of Sydney in 2005. She completed three years postdoctoral training in genetics and neuroimaging at the Brain Dynamics Centre, Westmead Hospital and University of Sydney (2006−2009). She has since been successful in obtaining two competitive national research fellowships; the first an ARC Linkage Postdoctoral Fellowship (2008−2011) in emotional wellbeing in twins (the TWIN‑E study); the second, a NHMRC Career Development Fellowship (2014−2017) in the neuroscience and genetics of resilience.

A/Prof Peters works to develop our understanding of the risk factors which increase our risk of cognitive decline and dementia and the ways in which we might act to reduce this risk. Alongside leading teams delivering high profile evidence synthesis work in the area of dementia risk reduction she has a particular interest in hypertension and in the treatment of hypertension in older adults.
