Leading Australian researcher into the mental health and well-being of Australia’s ageing population, NeuRA’s Prof Tony Broe, says urban based Aboriginal people, like their remote counterparts, are still traumatised from the effects of being removed from their country. Prof Broe is Prof of Geriatric Medicine UNSW and Scientific Director, Ageing Research Centre, Prince of Wales Hospital. He has conducted important research into Australia’s ageing population over many decades.
Prof Broe says displacement is an ongoing social trauma that continues to impact urban based Aboriginal communities and rejects suggestions that Aboriginal people should forget the past…. and “just get on with it.”
