The Sydney Brain Bank at NeuRA is a world-class scientific facility that collects, characterizes, stores, and distributes human brain and spinal cord tissue for research into ageing and neurodegenerative disorders.

Since its inception in 2009, the Sydney Brain Bank has gathered brain tissue samples from more than 840 donors, facilitated over 300 studies, and provided more than 48,000 specimens of donated neurological tissue to local, national and international research groups.

Key research projects at the Sydney Brain Bank:

● Environmental health and brain health: Investigating the impact of plastics and additives on brain health.

● Exploring the microbiota of the brain: The study will enable researchers to investigate the existence of the brain microbiome and its influence on healthy brain ageing.

● The Neuroinflammation Research Project: Understanding the role of inflammation in the neurodegenerative process.

● DIAN-TU trial: Comparing an experimental tau immunotherapy with a placebo in individuals with inherited forms of Alzheimer's disease.

● Understanding the glymphatic system: Investigating the glymphatic system in health and disease, including Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, Alzheimer's disease, and chronic traumatic encephalopathy.

● Investigating the impact of brain injury on brain health: Analysing the relationship between chronic traumatic encephalopathy, head injury, and clinical disease.
