Help keep families together through vital brain research

“Dementia is a medical crisis that is about to descend on our nation and our region, and funding is urgently needed. Even though my story won't have a particularly happy ending, I know that Moose's legacy can live on, and I intend to support where I can.”

– Louise, whose partner ‘Moose’ was diagnosed with young onset dementia at 46.

Increasing age is known to be a risk factor for dementia. However, the burden of young onset dementia, with symptoms occurring before age 65, has recently been identified as an important area not well supported by the health care system.

Dementia can affect a person at any age, and the changes can be profound. It’s so important to help someone affected understand what lies ahead.

New research is looking at ways to better support people with neurodegenerative conditions such as dementia and help them to plan for their future, before it’s too late.

Help reduce the devastating impact of a dementia diagnosis with a gift today. Your support will assist people like Moose and Louise in navigating the many changes that a diagnosis brings –regardless of their age.

When Moose was diagnosed with young onset dementia at 46, there was very little guidance and information about what might happen next available for him and his partner Louise.

“No one sat us down and said, ‘Here's a roadmap and some options for you,’ because Moose didn't fall into the aged care, 65 years old bracket. So we just got on with it.”

The Enhanced Advance care planning and life Review Longitudinal Intervention (EARLI) Project is just one project currently funded by NeuRA that’s studying a life story-based approach to helping people affected cope with their diagnosis and plan for their future while they can still be part of decision-making.

Please make a gift today to help advance research that will improve the way we support people living with dementia, and their loved ones.

1 in 4 Australians like Moose live with a neurological condition such as dementia – but with your gift today, we can find better ways to support them so they can live well and plan their own future, with dignity.
