Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has enormous potential to accelerate medical research and shift healthcare from a generic, “one‑size‑fits‑all” model to a system built on personalised and precision treatment.

In neuroscience in particular, applying AI to large‑scale data sets offers the opportunity to enhance both research and diagnosis, including the earlier detection of neurological and mental health conditions. AI‑driven predictive models may also improve our understanding of disease progression and likely intervention outcomes, enabling clinicians to tailor treatment protocols to each patient’s unique profile.

In 2026, NeuRA and Quantium established a strategic collaboration to advance the use of AI in neuroscience and mental health research. Under this partnership, Quantium serves as NeuRA’s exclusive AI provider, bringing deep expertise in data science and analytics to support the institute’s research ambitions. The collaboration brings together the complementary strengths of both organisations to drive innovation, improve health outcomes, and contribute meaningfully to the broader scientific and healthcare communities.

This partnership directly supports NeuRA’s 2025–2030 strategic priorities, particularly its commitment to precision medicine and healthcare innovation through AI. As a leader in neuroscience research, NeuRA will guide the strategic direction of joint initiatives to ensure alignment with national and institutional goals.

“As a clinician‑scientist I am hugely excited by the possibilities that AI opens up for our research and our diagnostic capabilities,” said NeuRA CEO, Professor Matthew Kiernan AM.

“For example, AI is allowing researchers to go back and analyse blood samples collected over 20 years in a UK study, generating new insights into Alzheimer’s disease for teams developing a diagnostic test.”

Brian Hartzer, CEO of Quantium Health, added: “As a global leader in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, we already have a number of alliances aimed at improving the quality and accessibility of healthcare through sophisticated analytics and actionable insights. Our collaboration with NeuRA is particularly exciting given its potential to help address some of society’s most pressing challenges in brain health and neurodegeneration.”.
