Academy Mentorship awarded to NeuRA researcher

NeuRA Senior Research Fellow and conjoint Associate Professor at UNSW Sydney, Kim van Schooten, has been announced as a 2025 mentee in the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (AAHMS) Mentorship Program.

The program attracts a competitive pool of applicants with mentees joining the Academy as Associate Members for three years to work closely with experienced Fellows as their mentors.

Associate Professor van Schooten, who works in the Falls, Balance and Injury Research Centre at NeuRA, said she was honoured to be joining the program.

I applied to the AAHMS Mentorship Program to grow as a research leader and strengthen my ability to drive impactful, cross-sector collaborations,” Assoc Prof van Schooten said.

My goal is to translate advances in mobility and ageing research into scalable solutions that support my long-term vision of safe mobility across the lifespan. This program offers the opportunity to learn from Australia’s most accomplished health leaders, refine my leadership, and ensure research translates into policy and practice.”

AAHMS Mentorship Program Chair and Fellow, Professor Gail Risbridger AM, said the program was an opportunity to learn from some of the top leaders in health and medical research.

Mentors provide independent advice and support in career development, succession planning and leadership advancement, she said.

The mentees also get the chance to contribute to the Academy’s work, including our policy outputs, while they participate in the program – providing important perspectives.”
