Since brain disease often involves neuronal death, research into strategies to restore neuronal numbers could lead to improved function and recovery in patients. The proposed research is significant because it aims to determine whether increasing the number of new neurons generated in vivo is feasible. The benefit of this new knowledge is that it will show that new cell production is not fixed but is modifiable during the adult life of primates.
