Our researchers are focused on identifying the gene-brain mechanisms that lead to increased anxiety and depression symptoms. To do this they are measuring various brain functions including both conscious and unconscious processes.
The aim of this work is to understand the best ways to prevent anxiety and depression in addition to how people may respond to treatment.
Our researchers have been able to show the impact of childhood trauma on brain function, including how the effects are made worse by genetic variations. They have also found that the type of trauma (such adult vs child trauma) has a varied impact on anxiety and depression symptoms.
Further research has shown that anxiety and depression symptoms can be hereditary and can also be influenced by environment, gender and genetic factors.
