Vale Professor Tony Broe AM

The NeuRA community is mourning Senior Principal Research Scientist Professor Tony Broe AM, who passed away on Sunday night.

Tony was an extraordinarily erudite human being, with a boundless passion for learning. He graduated from Sydney University and trained in general medicine, geriatric medicine and neurology in Sydney, Glasgow and the Mayo Clinic. He held various leadership positions at Lidcombe and Concord Hospitals, as well as academic positions at UNSW and Sydney University.

Tony was also an extraordinary advocate for our First Nations peoples, particularly regarding the disproportionate burden they bear re ageing and dementia. In later life, changing this situation through the evidence base provided by research became his greatest passion. He founded the Aboriginal Health & Ageing Group at NeuRA, sat on expert advisory committees for the NHMRC and consulted to Government. Tony drove the research program through long-term close partnerships with Indigenous communities which still exist today and consistently upheld the guiding principle of “not for us, but with us”.

Vale, Tony: your legacy lives on, you made an enormous difference to many and you will be missed.
