NeuRA and UNSW license Watch Walk AI to Spacetalk

An AI algorithm that detects serious health risks using wearable devices has been licensed by Aussie tech brand, Spacetalk Limited.

The Watch Walk AI was developed by researchers from Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA) and the University of NSW Sydney and now Spacetalk will embed it in new products worldwide after signing an exclusive, worldwide licence for the technology.

The gait biomarker algorithm was created by a team of researchers from NeuRA and UNSW, including NeuRA Research Fellow and Lecturer in the UNSW School of Health Sciences, Dr Lloyd Chan; NeuRA Senior Principal Research Fellow, Stephen Lord, and UNSW Associate Professor, Matthew Brodie.

Dr Chan developed the algorithm and led research that has shown Watch Walk could identify and predict health risks using data from wrist-worn sensors.

This licensing agreement is the next step for our research,” he said.

We have worked hard to develop this algorithm and demonstrate its ability to identify and predict a range of health risks, including dementia, stroke, falls and heart attack.

We plan to extend the current research to broaden the application of this work, both to frail older people and the younger population.”

While Spacetalk has previously focused on kids’ wearable devices, it has announced a move to develop a new generation of seniors’ and kids’ wearable products. The company intends to incorporate Watch Walk AI into new software-as-a-service and subscription app products that will use data from wearable devices to predict a user’s risk of serious health conditions, including dementia, depression, stroke, heart attack and injurious falls.

I am delighted with this agreement as it will allow the translation of our research findings to the clinical care of people at risk of many health conditions,” Professor Lord said.

Spacetalk Limited Director, Simon Crowther, announced the move to the ASX today on behalf of the board of director and can be read here: https://investorhub.spacetalk.co/announcements/6846774
